What are plain gauge spokes?
Plain gauge (straight gauge) spokes are the same diameter along their whole length. Unlike butted spokes, which are thinner in the middle, plain gauge spokes are simple, tough and easy to build with, making them a popular choice for BMX, downhill, touring and budget-friendly wheel builds.
What is ED coating on spokes?
ED (electrophoretic deposition) coating is a thin, even black finish applied to the spoke and nipple. It protects against rust and corrosion and gives your wheel a clean, stealthy look that holds up to weather, mud and regular riding.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a 14G spoke?
A 14G spoke is 2.0mm thick. It’s the standard heavy-duty gauge used on BMX, mountain bike, touring and tandem wheels.
Are 14G spokes good for BMX?
Yes. 14G plain gauge spokes are one of the most popular choices for BMX wheels because they’re strong, stiff and handle landings, grinds and hard impacts well.
Are plain gauge spokes better than butted spokes?
Neither is better in every case. Plain gauge spokes are stronger, simpler and better value, which suits BMX, touring and heavy riders. Butted spokes are lighter and slightly more flexible, which suits road and lightweight builds.
Do these spokes come with nipples?
Yes, each spoke is supplied with a matching 14G black ED coated brass nipple.
What length spokes do I need?
Spoke length depends on your hub, rim and lacing pattern. Measure your wheel or use a spoke calculator, or contact us and we’ll help you work out the correct length.
